+sound recording

The aim of this project was to create an emotional experience through sound using Max/MSP. The intent was to evoke a feeling of unease and possible fear, like there is someone (or something) unknown in the darkness, and it's not friendly.

A camera picks up movement and triggers sounds in Max/MSP. There are three layers of sound:
• The base layer is a low humming that plays continuously. It is a deep ominous sound.
• The second layer sounds like footsteps echoing, to suggest being in a large room and having someone else there. This sound only plays when there is no movement to give people the feeling that they're only safe when they're moving.
• A third sound is a whine that sounds distant. This sound plays repeatedly with a small interval between each whine and is turned on and off by movement.

Set Up Information
This sound is intended to play in a dimly lit room that has obstacles (such as boxes/crates) around it. A large room is ideal so people can move around and hide behind the obstacles. Speakers should be positioned around the room so the sound comes from multiple directions and the camera should be in a position so it captures as much of the room as possible. The computer is in a separate room.
